बहुत समय पहले की बात है, एक घने जंगल में बहती नदी के किनारे एक बड़ा जामुन का पेड़ था। उस पेड़ पर एक चतुर और खुशमिजाज बंदर रहता था। वह दिन भर पेड़ के मीठे-मीठे जामुन खाता और पेड़ों पर झूलता रहता।
एक दिन नदी में एक मगरमच्छ आया। वह थका और भूखा लग रहा था। बंदर ने कहा,
“मित्र, आप बहुत थके हुए लगते हैं। आओ, मेरे पेड़ से कुछ मीठे जामुन खाओ।”
मगरमच्छ ने धन्यवाद कहा और जामुन खाकर बहुत खुश हुआ। इसके बाद वह रोज आता और दोनों में गहरी दोस्ती हो गई।
कुछ समय बाद, मगरमच्छ अपने घर जामुन ले जाने लगा ताकि उसकी पत्नी भी उनका स्वाद चख सके। जब उसकी पत्नी ने जामुन खाए, तो उसने कहा,
“अगर जामुन इतने मीठे हैं, तो वो बंदर कितना स्वादिष्ट होगा! मैं उसका दिल खाना चाहती हूँ।”
मगरमच्छ पहले तो हैरान हुआ और मना कर दिया, लेकिन पत्नी के ज़ोर देने पर वह मान गया।
अगले दिन मगरमच्छ ने बंदर से कहा,
“मित्र, मेरी पत्नी तुम्हारे स्वादिष्ट जामुन की बहुत तारीफ करती है। वह तुम्हें अपने घर भोजन पर बुलाना चाहती है।”
बंदर खुश हुआ और मगरमच्छ की पीठ पर बैठ गया। जैसे ही वे नदी के बीच पहुँचे, मगरमच्छ बोला,
“मित्र, क्षमा करना, मेरी पत्नी तुम्हारा दिल खाना चाहती है, और मैं तुम्हें उसे देने ले जा रहा हूँ।”
बंदर चौंका, पर वह समझदार था। उसने कहा,
“मित्र, आपने पहले क्यों नहीं बताया? मैंने तो दिल पेड़ पर ही छोड़ दिया है! चलिए, वापस चलिए, मैं दिल ले आता हूँ।”
मगरमच्छ उसकी बातों में आ गया और जैसे ही किनारे पहुँचा, बंदर फुर्ती से पेड़ पर चढ़ गया और बोला,
“मूर्ख मगरमच्छ! क्या कोई दिल निकालकर कहीं और रख सकता है? जाओ, और कभी वापस मत आना।”
मगरमच्छ शर्मिंदा होकर वापस लौट गया और बंदर को भी सबक मिल गया कि किसी पर आँख मूंदकर भरोसा नहीं करना चाहिए।

The Monkey and the Crocodile – Panchatantra Story
Once upon a time, near a dense forest, stood a big jamun tree by the riverbank. A cheerful and intelligent monkey lived on the tree. He spent his days enjoying sweet fruits and swinging happily.
One day, a crocodile came swimming in the river. He looked tired and hungry. The kind monkey offered him jamuns and said,
“Dear crocodile, you look tired. Have some sweet jamuns from my tree.”
The crocodile gladly ate them and came back every day. Soon, they became close friends and spent hours talking.
The crocodile started taking jamuns home to his wife. After eating them, his greedy wife said,
“If the fruits are so sweet, the monkey’s heart must be even sweeter! I want to eat his heart.”
The crocodile was shocked and refused, but his wife kept pressuring him. At last, he gave in.
The next day, he invited the monkey to his home. The monkey agreed and jumped on his back. As they reached the middle of the river, the crocodile said,
“Friend, I lied. My wife wants to eat your heart. I’m taking you to her.”
The monkey stayed calm and replied,
“Oh dear! Why didn’t you tell me before? I left my heart on the tree. Let’s go back and get it.”
Fooled by the monkey’s words, the crocodile turned around. As soon as they reached the bank, the monkey leapt onto the tree and shouted,
“You fool! Can anyone live without their heart? Go away and never come back!”
The crocodile felt ashamed and swam away. The monkey learned not to trust anyone blindly again.
